If your windshield is broken, don't ignore the problem. That's the worst thing you can do. Ignoring the problem will only make it get worse. This is especially true with windshield cracks. Even a small crack will continue to spread until it takes over your entire windshield. Here are four other situations you should avoid when your windshield is damaged.

Don't Attempt Quick Fixes

If you've got a cracked windshield, you may think a quick fix will take care of the problem. That's not the case. Quick fixes don't actually fix anything. They only cover up the damage for a little while. Unfortunately, the damage is still there. Not only that, trying to cover up large cracks increases the risk of shattering. Quick fixes you should avoid include super glue and nail polish. Instead, have your windshield inspected. It may need to be replaced.

Don't Use the Car Wash

If the windshield is cracked on your car, don't use the car wash. This includes automatic car washes and power wand washes. Both types of car washes can cause your cracked windshield to shatter. That's because they put too much pressure on the damaged glass. This is especially true if you have a large horizontal crack across your windshield. Until you have your windshield replaced, don't use automatic or power wand car washes.

Don't Drive on Dirt Roads

If you've got a crack across your windshield, avoid dirt roads. The vibration can cause more damage to your windshield. In fact, it's a good idea to avoid any roads that may cause jolts and bumps to your car. This includes roads covered in potholes. Or, those that have the washboard effect. The best thing to do is stay on well-maintained surface streets. At least until you can get your windshield replaced.

Don't Replace It Yourself

Finally, if your windshield is damaged, you may want to save some money on the windshield replacement. To do that, you may decide to take the do-it-yourself approach. That's the biggest mistake you can make. First, the windshield you buy may not be the best quality. In fact, the glass might not include the highest safety standards. Second, your windshield might not get installed the right way. Unfortunately, both those issues can increase your risks for injury. This is especially true if you're involved in an accident. Avoid the safety risks. Have your windshield replaced by a professional auto glass company.
